David Eugene Burgess, 84, Mariposa, died on Thursday, Oct. 19 of natural causes.
He was a resident of Mariposa since 1992.
Dave was born in Baker, Oregon, and grew up in Sunnyvale, Calif. He graduated from Fremont High School where he played varsity football. Dave was active in Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts while growing up, and he always had a love for the great outdoors.
After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean Conflict aboard the aircraft carrier USS Boxer. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Dave earned an associate’s degree from San Jose City College.
During this time, Dave married Patricia Ann Hughes, who preceded him in death in 2003. Together, they raised three children.
Dave had a very successful career in manufacturing and plant management, culminated by 20 years of service for EJ Gallow Winery. After his retirement, he engaged in consulting work. Dave played a prominent role in restoring numerous historical pieces for the Mariposa Museum & History Center. He was a very talented craftsman in many areas and was always ready and willing to share his knowledge and talents with others.
He had a great love for mountain man rendezvous and black powder shooting, which was a longtime hobby. Together with his family, he participated in Jeeping and completed the Rubicon Run several times.
He is survived by his life partner of 12 years, Barbara Harriman. He is also survived by his children, Mike Burgess, Debbie Carr and Karen Alexander; and five adoring grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and two great-grandchildren.
